CONSOL SOLAR JAR
Renewable Energy In a Jar
The Consol Solar Jar™ is an eco-friendly solar light that literally provides bottled sunshine. Its award-winning design marries elegance with innovation in the timelessly beautiful Consol Classic preserve jar. Manufactured by Suntoy, proudly South African.
Suntoy was approached by Consol to design a solar light in a one-litre classic glass preserve jar. Design considerations included durable electronics, re-chargeable batteries, LED lights and a solar panel. Suntoy designed a unique on-off switch that has no moving parts and is watertight. The Consol Solar Jar™ is primarily a reading light and portable lantern. It is ideal for communities living without electricity off-grid. It also inspires creative table décor as a Theatre in a Jar. On a clear sunny day, a full charging offers six hours of light. On an overcast day, a full charging offers approximately one to three hours of light. An idea that sparked illuminated activations, truly is bottled sunshine. The principle is simple and seductively clever: it stores energy during the day and releases light at night. It’s a fun, eco-friendly and sustainable alternative light supply that makes it easy to go green.

Improving Livelihoods with Fair Trade
Suntoy is committed to improving the livelihoods of all our employees with various backgrounds, each of them having an amazing story to tell about how their jobs have changed their lives. Suntoy is achieving this through an ongoing partnership with the World Fair Trade Organization. We, as a company, and a family, stand by and endeavor to practice the 10 World Fair Trade principles in all areas of our business.
The first principle is creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged communities, and we demonstrate this by the people we employ.
The second principle is transparency and accountability, and we demonstrate this by being completely honest in dealings with our suppliers, our customers, and most importantly – our employees. We invite our employees to take part and give their valuable input concerning certain decision-making processes.
The third principle is adhering to and enforcing fair trade practices – trading fairly with concern for the social, economic and environmental well-being of our employees.
The fourth principle is payment of a fair price, which means paying our employees remuneration exceeding government regulations.
The fifth principle is ensuring no child labor and forced labor – therefore, we do not allow any person under the age of 18 to work for our company.
The sixth principle is the commitment to non-discrimination, gender equity and women’s economic empowerment and freedom of association – we demonstrate this by paying women the same wage as and afford them the same opportunities as their male counterparts. We do not discriminate against our employees, regardless of religion, ethnicity, and sexuality.
The seventh principle is ensuring fair working conditions – we practice this by making sure our employees have the necessary safety equipment to perform their job adequately and without harm.
The eighth principle providing capacity building – this means seeking to develop the skills of employees so they can continue to grow and prosper. The way in which we do this is by allowing our employees to further their education through various courses and qualifications, which will advance them in life and their jobs.
The ninth principle is promoting fair trade, which is raising awareness for the need of greater justice in world trade by trading fairly with marginalized and disadvantaged communities.
The tenth and final principle is respect for the environment – which is caring for the environment by maximizing use of available energy and raw materials while minimizing waste and pollution. We do this by recycling and reusing certain items and substances as well as disposing of waste in the correct manner.
